Good bulb, BEST price. : GE D2R 4200k HID Replacement Bulb

In October, I ordered the Sylvania D2R replacement bulb for $53.11. At the time, the picture looked like the picture I see now for the GE replacement bulb but, today, the photo on the Sylvania page seems to show the bulb in a holder assembly. In any case, the next day (I have Amazon Prime - it should have taken two days) the bulb arrived. It was the D2R lamp made by Osram-Sylvania. When I was able to compare it with the failed bulb, it was the exact replacement - down to manufacturer and model number! A very pleasant surprise, since I expected a generic replacement.

The light that failed was the passenger lamp on my 2005 Prius, which my user's manual says can be owner-replaced. (Newer Prius manuals don't include the HID lamps as owner-replaceable.) And the instructions & diagrams turned out to be accurate. But when I checked online, I found that other people have had horrible, expensive experiences with their HID lamps and dealers, with prices generally exceeding $400 to replace the lamp. Anyway, my experience turned out to be a LOT better.

Remember, this was the passenger side HID lamp on a 2005 Prius.

First, there's no need to remove the bumper or any other major part. As my user manual said, remove the cover from just behind the catch assembly and the air intake funnel - both straight forward, and a total of 5 minutes, done slowly.

Then remove the cables connected to the bulb assembly. This was the hardest part, and I still can't tell you how I got it off. It probably was the magic incantation I uttered. Or I might have discovered the catch on the connector.

Unscrew the black cap. This was a little frozen and there isn't any place to use a tool, but once I it started it moving, it came off easily.

After this was off, there is a board with two units on it. Though you can't tell from the backside you're looking at, one is the lamp socket and the other is the leveling motor or some part of it. There's no screw or nut here to remove and I was stuck until my friend showed me a shop manual. Though the manual erroneously said the bumper had to be removed, it had a good diagram of what I was seeing, with a big arrow saying I should turn the assembly counter-clockwise.

I did, and the board came off, including the lamp bulb. Easy to replace (don't touch the glass). Put everything back, and I'm done.

Total cost: $53.11 -- too much for a headlight, but hey ... .

When the driver's light needs replacement, it may be a little harder because you don't have the same room to work in. But if I remove the fuse box cover and pull out a circuit breaker or two, I should be able to change that bulb by feel. Though I'm hoping it won't have to be for a long time.

Why did the lamp fail after only 50,000 miles? We left the headlights on all the time and they got a lot more usage than normal. (Our previous car had automatic headlights that we liked, so leaving them on was the closest we could get to automatic lights on the Prius.) We no longer keep them on.

Confession: actually my daughter did all the work here, I supervised.
